There are college weekends. And then there is Little 500 weekend at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Dubbed “The World’s Greatest College Weekend,” the Little 500 2026 Bloomington Indiana is the nation’s largest collegiate bike race — a Bloomington tradition since 1951 that draws tens of thousands of fans, IU alumni from across the country, and an electric energy that takes over the entire city. In 2026, the event celebrates a landmark milestone: the 75th running of the men’s race, expected to draw a record crowd of 30,000 spectators.

If you’ve never experienced it — or if you experienced it as a student and haven’t been back — this is your year. And if you can’t make it in 2026, bookmark this guide and start planning for 2027. This is the kind of weekend that deserves a proper return.

What is the Little 500? Indiana University’s Greatest Tradition

Little 500 bike race Bill Armstrong Stadium Indiana University Bloomington 2026

The Little 500 was founded in 1951 by Howdy Wilcox Jr. to raise scholarship money for IU students working their way through college. Organized by the IU Student Foundation, teams of four riders compete relay-style around a quarter-mile cinder track at Bill Armstrong Stadium — men racing 200 laps (50 miles), women racing 100 laps (25 miles).

The event was immortalized in the Academy Award-winning 1979 film Breaking Away — filmed right here in Bloomington at the limestone quarries and on the IU campus. If you haven’t seen it before making the trip, watch it first.

In 2026, the Little 500 2026 Bloomington Indiana celebrates 75 years with philanthropy still at its heart — supporting the Students Helping Students campaign, which funds essential needs for IU students including food, housing, and healthcare.

The Full 2026 Little 500 Season

Most people only think about Race Weekend. But the Little 500 season in 2026 offers multiple ways to experience Bloomington at its most alive — from Qualifications Weekend in late March to the midweek Race Week events, all building to the main event on April 24–25.

Qualifications Weekend — Saturday, March 28, 2026

Little 500 bike race Bill Armstrong Stadium Indiana University Bloomington 2026

Location: Bill Armstrong Stadium | Time: 8 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The day the starting grid is set. Every registered team gets three attempts at a four-lap qualifying run — the 33 fastest men’s and women’s teams earn their spot in the race. The atmosphere is electric and intimate — nothing like the size of Race Weekend crowds.

Qualifications is Bloomington’s best-kept secret for alumni who know the tradition. You’re watching the story of race day begin in real time — the drama of a team nailing their run, the heartbreak of one that doesn’t make the cut. Pure Little 500.
